Short Bio

With a powerful, crystal-clear voice, Shelby Figueroa doesn’t just stir the emotions of her listeners, she sings straight to their hearts. The Ventura, California singer-songwriter and gifted pianist’s dynamic debut EP “Highwire” went to No. 1 on Amazon’s Hot New Releases when it was released in June 2016. Her songs – emotional, crisp, beautiful - blend dark pop with classic melodies. Shelby moves effortlessly from a velvety whisper to a fierce roar.

“Highwire” is an album about taking risks and facing fears. Shelby grew up listening to both doo-wop and classic rock records, and poured her classical piano training into covers of popular songs. Hearing her mom in their church choir also had a deep impact. As a teenager, Shelby honed her skills in the church’s band. When her mom passed away from a brief battle with cancer, she turned to songwriting to cope.

Recorded live by producer Shane Alexander at his newly opened Buddhaland Studios, Shelby’s five-song EP perfectly showcases her rich voice – reminiscent of Joanna Newsom and Joni Mitchell - and personal, but also universal, lyrics. Her recent performances include belting out the national anthem at the L.A. Galaxy’s season opener and a stunning show at Hollywood’s Hotel Café. Highwire can be found on iTunes, Amazon, and Spotify.

“Highwire” is the culmination of a lifetime of music and performance, an album about taking risks, facing fears and inspiring others to heal. Shelby grew up listening to both doo-wop and classic rock records, and poured her classical piano training into covers of popular songs. Hearing her mom in their church choir, and absorbing those angelic harmonies, also had a deep impact. As a teenager, Shelby honed her skills in the church’s band, and performed at weddings and special events. When her mom passed away from a brief battle with cancer, she turned to songwriting to cope. Music is, and has always been, essential to Shelby’s sense of self.

Recorded live by Southern California producer and musician Shane Alexander at his newly opened Buddhaland Studios, Shelby’s five-song EP perfectly showcases her rich voice – reminiscent of Joanna Newsom, Joni Mitchell and Regina Spektor - and honest, personal and also universal lyrics. “I’m up in the air/ My voice is trembling/ I’m on a high wire, and I’m afraid of heights,” she sings on the title track, over a soft piano melody.

“Dark Passenger” is a sweeping, brooding anthem about fighting against self-doubt. “What are you doing here/ My familiar, my familiar/ I thought we parted ways/ But you keep coming back for more,” she intones. Shelby’s voice pleads, then soulfully soars, on “Into a Storm,” a piano-fueled song about living a safe life, yet having the courage to break out, and do something unfamiliar and dangerous. On her cover of Dolly Parton’s “Wildflowers,” Shelby’s sweet, strong vibrato speaks to the heartfelt truth of not fitting in, and finding yourself.

From Ventura to Los Angeles and beyond, Shelby has been racking up recognition for her voice and songwriting. Her recent performances include triumphantly belting out the national anthem at the Los Angeles Galaxy’s season opener and a stunning show at the Hotel Café, Hollywood’s premier listening room. In 2012, she received second place in the “Ones to Watch” contest at Ventura’s legendary Zoey’s Café. “The more I share these songs and stories, the more I feel unified with humanity,” she says. “For a second we can lay aside our differences and say, ‘Yeah, I've been afraid. Yeah, I've doubted myself. That’s happened to me.”
